Cyclone girls soccer takes momentum into regionals

Boysen’s squad wins three of last four regular season games; HCHS and AHSTW start tournament play Tuesday

HARLAN (May 24) -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team finished the regular season by winning three out of four home games last week, beating AHSTW, WCV/Nodaway Valley/ACGC and Creston while losing to Panorama.
The four-game set included a sudden-death, double PK shootout win over WCV/NV/ACGC on Wednesday and Friday’s match being moved from Creston to Harlan due to the forecast for severe storms in southern Iowa.
The Cyclones will take a 9-7 overall record into Class 1A regional play and face Logan-Magnolia (3-11) in a Region 2 quarterfinal at Treynor on Tuesday (May 28).
HCHS 2, AHSTW 0
Freshmen Kaia Bieker and Raegen Wicks both scored a goal and Lexi Musich made 12 saves as the Cyclones shut out the Lady Vikes 2-0 Monday on Senior Night.
HCHS seniors McKenna Boardman, Savannah Parman, Asia Williamson, Alex Defenbaugh, Kara Weis, Lindsey Metzger, Kelli Christensen and Olivia Petersen (manager) were recognized with their parents prior to the game.
AHSTW finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal but the Cyclones were able to post their fifth shutout win of the year. The Lady Vikes had one goal nullified early due to a hand ball and a Jordyn Holtz free kick was punched over the goal on a great save by Musich to keep the game scoreless.
AHSTW closed the regular season at 6-6 and will open 1A regional play at Tri-Center (11-5) Tuesday (May 28).
HCHS 3, WCV/NV/ACGC 2
Postponed 24 hours due to rain, Wednesday’s match required 100 minutes of soccer and two PK shootouts to determine a winner. In the end, HCHS prevailed 3-2 over West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley/ACGC in sudden death.
The score was tied 2-2 following regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, setting up the first penalty kick shootout. Both teams finished 4-for-5, including Cyclone conversions by Anna Shelton, Kaia Bieker, Savannah Parman and Raegen Wicks. The sudden death round lasted just one attempt as Dani Arkfeld converted for HCHS and Lexi Musich made a save to end the match.
WCV/NV/ACGC (8-6) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of regulation before Wicks tied the score three minutes later and gave the Cyclones a 2-1 lead midway through the second half. Meredith Marks tied it back up for the visitors in the 72nd minute.
Panorama 7, HCHS 1
The visiting Panthers (10-5) scored four goals in the first 13 minutes Thursday and added three more in the second half to win 7-1 at Merrill Field in a game that featured a lightning delay with 19 minutes left in the first half.
Audrey Cmelik and Ella Waddle both scored twice for the Panthers, who held the Cyclones to just four shots on goal.
HCHS scored its only goal late in the first half when Kaia Bieker volleyed a low corner kick from Anna Shelton past the goalie.
HCHS 3, Creston 1
Kaia Bieker scored a pair of goals and Raegen Wicks had one goal and one assist as the Cyclones defeated the Panthers 3-1 on Friday. HCHS led 2-0 at the half and made it 3-0 less than two minutes into the second.
