Cyclone girls rise to the occasion, win Johnson Relays

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community track girls picked a good night for a breakout performance here Monday, winning seven events and scoring a season-high 181 points to maintain their long run of team titles in the Johnson Cyclone Relays.
HCHS outscored Denison-Schleswig (164) by 17 points and finished well ahead of third-place Treynor (115) and Logan-Magnolia (107) in the final standings. AHSTW placed sixth out of eight teams with 45 points.
It was just the second meet title of the season for the Cyclone girls, who fell one point short of matching last year’s winning total. Their 181 points were 52.5 more than they scored in the previous two meets combined.
As per tradition, Harlanite Gene Johnson presented the Cyclones with their first-place plaque following the meet. Johnson is the widow of former Harlan Community athletic director Harold “Swede” Johnson, who was instrumental in raising funds for Merrill Field’s first all-weather track - now known as the Swede Johnson Track - in 1995.
