HARLAN -- Playing without two of their standouts in injured seniors Haley Arkfeld and Michaela Bissen, the Harlan Community girls soccer team lost a pair of Hawkeye Ten Conference games earlier this week, falling at third-ranked (2-A) Lewis Central 10-0 on Monday (May 15) and losing at home to Atlantic 4-1 on Tuesday (May 16). The Cyclones are now 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Lewis Central, a defending state champion, went ahead 9-0 in the first half and won by the mercy rule in the 42nd minute. Kelsey McSorley scored four goals for the Titans and Suzie McDonald added a pair. HCHS did not attempt a shot on goal.
Against Atlantic, junior Kylee Hinz scored the Cyclones’ only goal after tracking down a long pass from Alana Monson, splitting two defenders and shooting with her left foot. Zoey Hasty scored two goals for Atlantic (3-8, 1-5 H-10), which enjoyed a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. HCHS won the JV match 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Megan Andersen.
