Cyclone girls avenge Rams, win LC Cross Country Invite

Six HCHS girls place in top 10; Gross leads Cyclone boys to fifth; Falkena medals for AHSTW

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Sept. 8) -- Harlan Community cross country coach Doug Renkly knew that his girls squad had the potential to be pretty darn special this year.
But this good, this soon? Perhaps.
Despite having a two-week layoff since their season opener - two meets were cancelled - the Cyclone girls certainly made a statement Saturday morning with their first-place showing in the Lewis Central Invitational at Iowa Western Community College.
Placing six runners in the top 10, HCHS outscored Glenwood by 13 points, 30 to 43, to avenge a one-point loss to the Rams at Glenwood on August 25. Glenwood (6th) and Harlan (12th) are both listed in the top 15 of the most recent IATC cross country rankings in Class 3A.
Glenwood senior Janette Schraft won Saturday’s five-kilometer race by 12 seconds over Tri-Center’s Peyton Pogge, 19:12 to 19:24, and Ram sophomore Abby McIntyre placed third in 20:40.
After that it was a true pack of Cyclones: Greichaly Kaster, Lucy Borkowski and Abby Alberti placed fourth, fifth and sixth - all within five seconds of each other - and Kaia Bieker, Raegen Wicks and Brecken Van Baale claimed eighth, ninth and 10th - all within a six-second span. Liv Freund wasn’t far behind in 18th.
HCHS boys fifth
Led by sophomore Trey Gross in eighth place (17:44), the Cyclone boys finished fifth out of nine teams on Saturday with a score of 139, moving up two spots from a year ago.
Thomas Jefferson won the team title by just three points over Plattsmouth, 59-62, and Glenwood (80) and Lewis Central (87) also finished ahead of HCHS. Jerry Jorgenson of Treynor was the boys individual champ in 16:52.
Coach Renkly said he is seeing good progress within the boys ranks overall. Brennon Munch finished 26th at LC while Isaac Jones (35th), Mitchell Rueschenberg (39th) and Wyatt Obrecht (40th) rounded out the team score.
Falkena leads AHSTW
Sophomore Chloe Falkena emerged as the lone medalist for AHSTW Saturday, placing 11th out of 68 varsity runners in 21:28. The Lady Vikes placed fifth as a team with a score of 149. Also finishing in the top 40 were Julia Kock (27th), Holly Hoepner (36th) and Jade Draman (37th).
Only two Viking boys ran in the varsity race: Collin Shutters finished 60th and Evan Pattee was 73rd.
