Cyclone coaches happy for ADM’s Book, a Walnut native

SUBSTATE BASEBALL NOTEBOOK

HARLAN (July 24) - Harlan Community coaches were disappointed to see their season come to an end on Wednesday, but happy for ADM head coach Jason Book. Most members of the Cyclone coaching staff have known Book, a Walnut native, for quite some time, trading scouting reports over the years or coaching alongside Book in the case of current HCHS assistant Heath Stein.
“I guess if you’re going to lose to an opposing coach, he’s one that we’d prefer to lose to,” said HCHS head coach Steve Daeges. “I’m happy for him that he’s (qualified) for the state tournament."
For Book, the feeling of respect is mutual for the Cyclone coaching staff. “I love those guys and they’ve always been great friends, great supporters,” he said.
Jason graduated from Walnut in 1994, just missing the Warriors’ first two trips to the state baseball tournament in 1995 and 1997 under head coach Denny Book (his dad), who was also an assistant for state tournament teams in 2004 and 2005. Jason Book is now in his sixth year as ADM’s head coach and ninth year on the staff overall. He was an assistant coach when the Tigers went to state in 2011 and 2012, but says the feeling this time around is different.
“It’s really undescribable,” he said. “It’s a little bit sweeter, I think, when you’re in the big chair.”
Vande Berg calls it a career
For Harlan Community assistant coach Mark Vande Berg, the end of the 2019 baseball season Wednesday night came with added significance. Vande Berg has retired from teaching and coaching following a career spanning 29 years with HCHS and 34 years overall. During the last 26 years as an assistant coach for Steve Daeges, Vande Berg has been a part of 16 trips to the state tournament, three state titles and five state runner-up teams.
“It sets in,” said a tearful Vande Berg after the game. “There’s a time for everybody and it’s my time, but I’m going to miss it. I really wish I could still do it, but it’s time.
“I can say that in 29 years, especially the last 10 or so, I have had more fun than one man should ever have the right to have."
