Cyclone boys top Kuemper in PK shootout, now 2-0 in H-10

CARROLL (April 8) -- Cole Kramer’s successful penalty kick in the second round of a PK shootout proved to be the game winner last Monday night as the Harlan Community boys soccer team outlasted Kuemper Catholic 3-2 and improved to 2-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
HCHS rallied back twice in regulation to force a 2-2 tie, then played two scoreless overtime sessions before matching the Knights by making 4-of-5 tries in the first PK shootout. The second shootout ended after just one try for each team when Kramer converted for the Cyclones and Blake Boell’s try for Kuemper was saved by Harlan goalie Konner Leinen.
The Cyclones evened their record at 3-3 overall while the Knights dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the H-10.
The Knights scored the lone goal of the first half when Blake Baumhover connected from the top of the 18-yard box off a Cyclone clear. A handball call on Kuemper gave HCHS a penalty kick with 24:56 left in the second half and Jordan Fink connected to tie the score.
A corner kick by Carson Ludwig set up a header goal by Baumhover about nine minutes later to put the Knights back on top, but the Cyclones would tie it once again at the 4:48 mark when a double assist by Aaron Wollaston and Kramer got the ball back to Levi Culp for a goal from six yards out.
Following the scoreless overtimes, HCHS converted its first four tries of the PK shootout as Fink, Dalton Gross, Culp and Michael Heithoff all connected. Kuemper also finished 4-for-5, setting up sudden death and Kramer’s game winner.
