Cyclone boys escape Glenwood with 1-0 victory
GLENWOOD (April 29) -- A header goal by Dalton Gross with 21:24 remaining proved to be the game winner Monday night as Harlan Community outlasted Glenwood 1-0 for a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys soccer win.
The match was even throughout, with HCHS taking 15 total shots (eight on goal) compared to 13 and five for Glenwood. The lone goal occurred off a short free kick by Jordan Fink to Gross, who outjumped a pack of players and headed the ball into the net.
“That score energized us and we began to take over the game at that point,” said HCHS head coach Dave Voge. “It was a very even match and we just happened to convert on one of our opportunities.”
Michael Heithoff led the Cyclones with three shots on goal (four total) while Cole Kramer had three total shots. Defensive intercept leaders were Levi Culp with eight and Fink with seven. Aaron Wollaston had four steals and five intercepts and Heithoff and Kramer both had three steals. Goalie Konner Leinen finished with five saves.
The Cyclones improved to 4-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play (2nd place) and 6-6 overall while Glenwood fell to 3-2 in the Hawkeye Ten and 5-7 overall.
