Cyclone boys blank Treynor in damp season opener

Boys Soccer - Harlan Community 3, Treynor 0

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team scored a pair of breakaway goals in the opening 20 minutes, then added an insurance goal midway through the second half to down Treynor 3-0 Thursday night in a cold and misty season opener at Merrill Field.
The Cyclones’ first two goals - in the seventh and 20th minutes - were almost identical as seniors Devin Mahoney and Richard Blackman scored in breakaway fashion. Both times, Treynor goalie Seth Young charged toward the edge of the 18-yard box for a potential save, but was unable to make a sliding clear and left the net unattended for HCHS goals. Downfield assists were credited to Drew Voge and Mahoney.
Later, with 25:05 left in the match, Voge crossed a pass across the box to freshman Michael Heithoff, who punched in the goal to make it 3-0.
“We worked on that in practice and it was nice to see it come to fruition,” said HCHS head coach Dave Voge, who was pleased with his team’s improved focus and effort compared to their scrimmage three days earlier vs. AHSTW.
