SHENANDOAH -- Led by a second-place finish in No. 1 doubles from Brock Bruns and Jonathan Cheek, Harlan Community came in eighth in the team standings of the Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Tennis Tournament held April 29 in Shenandoah.
Clarinda won a tight race for the team title with 24 points, followed by Atlantic with 23, Denison-Schleswig 21 and St. Albert 20.
HCHS scored nine points overall - seven courtesy of Bruns and Cheek, who went 2-1 on the day. Placing eighth and scoring one point each were Carter Wagner in No. 2 singles (1-3) and the No. 2 doubles team of Mitchell Rueschenberg and Braden Fink (1-3). Adam Kohl went 0-2 in No. 1 singles.
“Overall, this was a great day for us,” stated HCHS coach Chad Bruns. “We have struggled in duals this year, not winning a meet. Our goal was to be in the top eight teams, which we achieved.”
The team of Bruns and Cheek entered the day with the number three seed in their bracket. They reached the finals with wins of 8-6 and 8-4, then lost to the top-seeded team from Denison (Sean Moran and Colin Reis) 1-6, 2-6 to place second.
In No. 2 doubles, the team of Rueschenberg and Fink won their first round consolation match 8-1 before losing a pair of 5-8 decisions to unseeded teams from Shenandoah and Glenwood. They started the meet with a 3-8 loss to the fourth-seeded team from Red Oak.
Wagner led fourth-seeded Teagan Matheny of Glenwood 5-3 (40-15) in the first round but ended up losing 5-8. He picked up an 8-6 consolation victory before losing his next two matches. Kohl lost his No. 1 singles matches by scores of 1-8 and 2-8.
