Bruns places fourth at district tennis

 DENISON (May 9) -- Highlighted by freshman Brock Bruns placing fourth in the singles bracket, Harlan Community finished fourth out of seven teams with seven points in the Class 1A Boys District Tennis Tournament held May 9 at Denison.
 Kuemper Catholic won the team title with 23 points and clinched a spot in the 1A substate team tourney while Denison-Schleswig (17) and St. Albert (13) placed second and third and qualified for preliminary substate play.
 Bruns earned two of the Cyclones’ three wins in the district meet - their final competition of the season - and matched his seed by placing fourth with a record of 2-2.
 Following straight-set wins over Denison’s Chris Krajicek and St. Albert’s Nathan Rhedin, Bruns lost 0-6, 0-6 vs. top-seeded Tanner Finken of Kuemper in the semifinals, then faced No. 2 seed Brandon Frey (Heelan) in the third-place final and lost 2-6, 1-6. He finished the season with an 8-7 record in singles play.
 Senior Bailey Schmitz also played singles for the Cyclones and lost a tough three-setter in the first round to Kuemper’s Luke Hicks, falling 0-6, 6-3, 2-6. Schmitz led 2-1 in the third before Hicks took control.
 The Cyclone doubles team of senior Kaleb Kaster and junior Jonny Cheek went 1-1 at districts, winning their first-round match decisively (6-2, 6-1) before losing to the top-seeded Denison team of Jaden Heiden and Sean Moran in the quarterfinals.
 The Cyclones’ other doubles team was senior Lucas Schmitz and freshman Mitchell Rueschenberg, who lost their only match 3-6, 5-7 to a team from Cherokee. They led 5-4 in the second set before losing the last three games.
