Boys Soccer: Vikings improve to 15-1

Substate play begins May 20

LOGAN (May 14) -- Sixth-ranked (1A) AHSTW improved to 15-1 overall Tuesday night with an 8-0 win at Logan-Magnolia.
Gabe Madsen scored a hat trick by the midway point of the second half while Brayton Tuma, Blake Osbahr, Kris Ferry, Jaedan Rasmussen and Ben Ehlers added one goal each for the Vikings. AHSTW led 3-0 at the break, then added five goals during a 15-minute stretch of the second half.
Kyle Branan led the Vikes with two assists and four others had one - Tuma, Osbahr, Madsen and Ferry.
The Vikings have two regular-season games left - May 16 vs. West Central Valley and May 17 at Carroll Kuemper - before turning their attention to Class 1A substate play. They will host Clarinda Academy in a first round game Monday, May 20. The winner will play Wednesday at Oakland against Underwood or Atlantic.
Vikings win OT game
AVOCA (May 10) -- The AHSTW boys survived a tough test from Underwood last Friday night, winning 2-1 in sudden death overtime when Blake Osbahr scored off an assist from Ben Ehlers less than two minutes into the OT.
The match was scoreless for 78 minutes until Osbahr scored with 2:03 left in regulation (assisted by Kyle Branan). The Eagles answered with just :03 left, however, scoring on a throw-in and three consecutive headers - the last one by Jared Stark going into the net.
“This was an exciting defensive struggle that gave us a lot of opportunities on the net that we were not able to capitalize on,” stated Viking coach James Johnson. “Credit Underwood for putting up a great fight as they were missing five players to the (state qualifying track meet).
“It is good for us to be challenged at this point in the season and we were able to respond late in the game to pull out the win after momentum was not on our side.”
