Assmann a finalist for Register’s Athlete of the Year award

 DES MOINES -- Gracie Assmann of the Harlan Community Schools Delegation has been selected by Special Olympics Iowa as one of three finalists for the Special Olympics Girl Athlete of the Year at the Des Moines Register Sports Awards, set for Friday, June 21, at Wells Fargo Arena.
 The event honors the state’s best athletes, coaches and teams for their achievements throughout the year and will be headlined by Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner and three-time Olympian Lolo Jones, both Iowa natives.
 Gracie Assmann, who will be a senior this fall at HCHS, is the daughter of Jackie Scheuring and the granddaughter of Duane Assmann. She has competed in Special Olympics for three years. Gracie has had a busy 2019, beginning with her 5-on-5 basketball team winning the Junior division of the 2019 West Conference Basketball Tournament. In March, her team competed at the Special Olympics Iowa Mid-Winter Tournament in Iowa City. In April, she competed at the Southwest Spring Games, where she qualified to compete in the mini-javelin competition at the 2019 Special Olympics Summer Games May 24 - her sixth state competition.
