Area trio qualifies for 1-A state meet

Pauley wins district title at 160; Becerra, Bruns both place second

 UNDERWOOD -- Area wrestlers Gabe Pauley and Joel Becerra of AHSTW and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Cole Bruns all qualified for the state tournament on Saturday by placing first or second at the Class 1-A District Tournament in Underwood.
 Pauley, a sophomore 160-pounder won his four-man bracket while Becerra and Bruns, both seniors, placed second at 145 and 170, respectively.
 The local trio will begin state competition Thursday afternoon (1:30 p.m.) at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
 Two other AHSTW district qualifiers finished their seasons on Saturday as senior 182-pounder Erik Jorgensen placed third with a 1-2 record while freshman 106-pounder Joel Sampson went 0-2 and placed fourth.
 Jorgensen (38-13) started the day with a 3-1 win over Chris Darnold of East Mills before losing to Treynor’s Sam Gregory in the finals. He was then pinned by West Central Valley’s Riley Algreen in a wrestleback for second.
 Underwood won the district team title with 105 points and also led the 14-team field with five individual champs and six state qualifiers. Panorama placed second with 86 points and claimed five state qualifiers. Eleven other squads had at least one state qualifier, including the seventh-place Vikings (42.5 points) and 13th-place Spartans (14).
