Area athletes qualify five events for Drake Relays

 DES MOINES -- Area track and field athletes have qualified five events - four individual and one relay - for the 2017 Drake Relays in Des Moines later this week. The list of local qualifiers includes three entries for the Harlan Community girls team and one each for the HCHS and AHSTW boys. High school competition will take place Thursday-Saturday, April 27-29, at Drake Stadium in conjunction with college and university events, Rio Olympic Games rematches, Special Elite invitationals and Masters Division events.
 HCHS senior Gillian Streit will be the first area athlete to compete when she takes part in the girls discus competition Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Streit currently ranks 12th in the state (all classes) with her personal-best throw of 126 feet, one inch, and will compete in the second flight of prelims.
 Three more area individuals will compete on Friday morning, starting with HCHS senior Allison Bruck in the 100-meter hurdles prelims at 8:00 a.m. Bruck’s qualifying time of 15.36 is tied for ninth-best in the state as of Monday. She has been assigned to Heat 3, Lane 3 of the premlims, with the fastest eight prelim times qualifying for the final at 11:04 a.m. Friday.
 AHSTW junior Gage Clay will be competing in his second Drake Relays Friday when he competes in the boys 100-meter dash prelims (Heat 2, Lane 8) at 8:46 a.m. The final is set for 1:51 p.m. Clay qualified last Tuesday by clocking a time of 11.07 at the OA-BCIG Invite.
 HCHS junior Nick Foss was the last area athlete to qualify for Drake when he soared 21 feet, nine inches in the long jump Thursday night at Waukee. Foss will compete out of Flight 1 on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
 The final area event will be the Cyclone girls in the 4x100 relay Friday at 5:10 p.m. One of 80 qualifiers in the event, HCHS will run out of Heat 10, Lane 5 in the prelims. The event final is set for Saturday at 3:31 p.m. HCHS will run Sidney Craig, Bruck, Alyssa Sotelo and Chloe Hansen.
