Anzalone homer sparks Lady Vikes past Southwest Valley

AHSTW adds eight-run sixth inning to win regional opener 13-7, then falls to Treynor in nine innings Wednesday

AVOCA -- For the second straight season, the AHSTW softball team opened Class 2-A regional play in Avoca with a mid-game rally and ultimately a comfortable win over Southwest Valley.
Last year, the Lady Vikes trailed 5-3 after three innings before rallying to beat the Timberwolves 9-5.
On Monday night (July 3), AHSTW was down 4-3 in the fourth when Katie Anzalone’s two-run home run - the team’s first of the year - changed the momentum of the game. The Lady Vikes tacked on eight runs in the bottom of the sixth and won 13-7 to advance to Wednesday’s Region 8 quarterfinal at Treynor (see separate story).
Anzalone, a sophomore third baseman, also doubled on the night and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
It was still a one-run game in the sixth when AHSTW (14-10) sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on four hits, two walks, a hit batter and three Southwest Valley errors.
Sydney Zimmerman, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, made it 7-4 with a two-run single while Haley Constable, Madison Rasmussen and Emily Butcher also had hits in the inning and Paige Osweiler walked twice.
