Another week, another big game for Cyclones

HCHS football team travels to Glenwood in matchup of 4-1 teams seeking 2-0 start in Class 3A, District 9

GLENWOOD (Oct. 4) -- For the second straight week, the Harlan Community football team will face a Class 3A, District 9 foe with the exact same record and playoff aspirations as the Cyclones.
Last week it was 3-1 Adel-DeSoto-Minburn. This Friday it’s Glenwood. The Cyclones and Rams - both 4-1 overall and 1-0 in district play - will square off at 7:00 p.m. on Glenwood’s brand new turf field with a few things in common.
 • HCHS lost a Week 2 game by 20 points at Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 47-27. Glenwood lost a Week 4 home game by 19 to Dallas Center-Grimes, 28-9.
 • The two teams share one common opponent thus far in Carroll. The Rams beat the Tigers by 16 points in Week 1 (44-28). The Cyclones beat the Tigers by 13 in Week 3 (34-21).
 • Both teams won last week’s district opener in varying degrees of comeback fashion. HCHS fell behind 14-0 early vs. ADM before taking control and winning 41-28. Glenwood trailed 28-7 in the third quarter at Winterset but valiantly rallied to win 35-28.
 • Both teams also know they must still face 4th-ranked and unbeaten Lewis Central in the coming weeks, making this week’s matchup that much more important.
“We’d like to be 5-1 going into (that LC game next week),” said HCHS interim head coach Todd Bladt. “Both squads really don’t have any quit in them, so I think it’s bound to be a highly-contested ball game... This will be one of our biggest tests since Sergeant Bluff.”
Following a disappointing 4-5 campaign in 2018, Glenwood has bounced back nicely this fall behind a veteran offensive line of great size - all five starters check in between 235 and 275 pounds - and a talented senior quarterback in Zach Carr, who directs the Rams’ spread offense.
Carr ran for 134 yards and four touchdowns last week and also completed 13-of-16 passes for 126 yards as Glenwood staged its big comeback at Winterset. The Rams’ final two scores followed a recovered onside kick and a turnover on downs in Huskie territory. The defense then held one last time to preserve the victory.
“It was a fun ending, but a frustrating first three quarters,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. “We’ll need to play better throughout the game to have a chance this week."
Through five games, Carr leads the Rams with 342 net rushing yards while passing for 899 yards and eight touchdowns with just one interception. He opened the season with a monster game vs. Carroll, throwing for 387 yards and five TDs and adding 131 on the ground.

HCHS (4-1, 1-0) at Glenwood (4-1, 1-0) • Friday, October 4 • 7:00 p.m.
