AHSTW track squads win 11 gold medals in home meet
AVOCA (April 4) -- The AHSTW track teams combined to win 11 events during Thursday’s AHSTW Co-Ed Invitational as the girls placed second and the boys took third in the final team standings.
The Lady Vikes won seven events and placed second in four others, scoring 152 points and placing second behind Underwood’s 172. Audubon was third with 125 points while Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton finished sixth out of seven teams with 40.
Underwood also won the boys’ half of the meet with seven gold medals and 156 points, followed by Denison-Schleswig (153) and AHSTW (86). Exira-EHK was eighth with 35.
Senior Drake Partridge had a big night for the Viking boys, winning the 100 and 200-meter sprints as well as the long jump. Partridge’s hand-held times in the 100 (11.36) and 200 (22.93) were both personal bests. AHSTW also won the 4x200 relay and placed second in the 4x100 with season-best performances.
The Lady Vikes’ seven golds included a sweep of the 100 and 200 by Talia Welsh and wins by Ryann Portch in the 800 (2:27) and Holly Hoepner in the 400 hurdles (1:09). Kinsey Scheffler won the discus and AHSTW won both the sprint and distance medley relays.
The Exira-EHK boys’ top finishes came in the field events where Aaron Allen placed second in the shot put and Anthony Kingery was second in the discus. The Spartan girls placed third in the 4x800 relay and fourth in the distance medley.
