2A Regional Volleyball: Wolves’ season ends in five-set defeat

Underwood scores first 13 points of deciding fifth set to beat IKM-M

UNDERWOOD (Oct. 16) -- Going into the fifth set of Tuesday’s Class 2A regional volleyball opener at Underwood, IKM-Manning was right where it wanted to be.
The Wolves had just held on for a thrilling 27-25 win in set four to even the match and force a winner-take-all race to 15. No one on either side, though, could have envisioned what was about to happen.
Plagued by a series of passing errors and some well-placed serves by Eagle sophomore Zoe Rus, IKM-Manning was overwhelmed by an avalanche of negative momentum in allowing 13 straight points to start the fifth.
Timeouts at 5-0 and 9-0 failed to turn the tide and Underwood finished things off with its fifth ace of the set to prevail 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-27, 15-2.
The Eagles, who also beat IKM-M by a pair of 3-1 scores since September 27, improved to 23-12 and will now play at 7th-ranked Tri-Center (28-7) in Monday’s Region 4 quarterfinal round. The Wolves closed their season at 14-17 overall.
“I thought going into five it was going to be a different outcome than what it was,” said IKM-Manning coach Kathy Lage. “I don’t know what happened there. We couldn’t seem to get anything working... All of a sudden we couldn’t pass.”
The Wolves must now say goodbye to a large cast of nine seniors that includes Cadwell, Halbur, Irlmeier, Lingle, Muhlbauer, Hanna Mullen, Thompson, Sydney Wegner and Bailey Schechinger. Cadwell and Muhlbauer were both three-year starters and Thompson started for two years.
