Winter Storm Kayla hits Shelby County

Video posted at 9:22 am

Maybe it was the non-stop barrage of warnings that started on Thurs., Jan. 28 that warned us of impending Winter Storm Kayla...it didn’t hit with a whimper...it’s pretty much what we expected....heavy wet snow with estimates in the eight inch range but worse as you go north of Shelby Co.... 31-32 degree temps (wind chill of 10 degrees) and early this morning at about 6 am the snow was arriving at one inch or more an hour with strong uncharacteristic northeast winds blowing upwards of 25 mph.

Accuweather is reporting the snow to stop at about 10:30 am, with snowfall in the 6 - 10" range for our area....

Harlan was pretty much a ghost town, so much so City crews are able to plow without worrying about cars parked around the square.....driving in to work from Myrtue Medical Center to Fareway to Downtown I didn’t meet one car.

Closings in Harlan included: Harlan Community Schools, Shelby Co. Catholic School, Shelby Co. Courthouse, Myrtue’s clinics in Harlan, Avoca, Earling and Elk Horn as well as Behavorial Health (the hospital and ER are open); Petersen Family Wellness Center and likely many others as staff living out of town were warned not to battle dangerous winds.
