Utilities water leak estimated to be about 500,000 gallons

HARLAN -- Harlan Municipal Utilities CEO Ken Weber said recently that the recent water leak in the utility system could easily total a half-million gallons.
The main leak, found in a field behind Remington Seed, was in a 6-inch line that supplies the Cresthaven area.   Under 130-pounds of pressure, the six-day leak could easily amount to 500,000 gallons, Weber said.  Sadly, he added, it was all treated water.
Despite three days of searching and trying to regionalize the leak, it wasn’t until a Remington employee, who was mowing the fields behind their warehouses, found a soaked and ponded area he couldn’t get his tractor through and notified HMU.   The leak was hidden by the high grasses and in an unused area of the acreage.
