Two 4-H clubs make an impact in Elk Horn
ELK HORN -- When the school bell rings indicating the end of the day, Kristen Rutherford walks from the high school part of the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton Schools to the elementary side once a month to pick up her students for Clover Kids.
“When you’re little you get to explore,” Rutherford said. “The Clover Kids is cool because … for kids that have small pets or animals they start to learn about responsibility and what it’s like to be involved in agriculture.”
The 4-H Club for grades kindergarten through third, started off as an idea by Rutherford and her colleague.
Even though she is surrounded by books during the day as a librarian, Brenda Hansen is a 4-H kid at heart. Raised in an agricultural family, she has high respect for the local clubs and yearned to get involved.
