Jazz students perform at festival, awarded

    HARLAN -- On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Drake University hosted its annual honor jazz band festIval.  Students performing in this event are nominated by their directors and are placed into four bands based on their grade in school.
    The students attend rehearsals and master classes during the day and put on a concert in the evening.  Harlan Community had 10 students attend the festival.  Harlan students in the senior band included Cati Davis, Laura Kaufmann, and Addison Ferry.  The junior band included Fay Porter and Alan Holloway.  The sophomore band included Jenny Weisenborn, Fidel Martinez-Greer, and Drew Voge.  Members of the freshman band were Caitlin Bissen and Ben Rihner.  
    At the end of the evening, Drake Jazz I performed two charts for the audience.  Former Jazz Experience member Jacob Lemons performed with the band on lead tenor.  
Jack Oatts Jazz Festival
    On Saturday, Feb. 6, the middle school and high school jazz bands performed at the Jack Oatts Jazz Festival in Earlham.  Both bands finished in first place in their respective classes.  In addition, both bands won outstanding saxophone, trumpet, and rhythm section awards in their respective classes.
    The following middle school students received an award for their solos: Emma Krehbiel, Rachel Anderson, Elise Juhl, Justina Borgman, and Griffin Schleimer. The following Jazz Experience students received an award for their solos: Laura Kaufmann, Fay Porter, Alan Holloway, Fidel Martinez-Greer, Jenny Weisenborn, and Drew Voge.
    Krehbiel and Weisenborn were also named outstanding performers of their respective classes and Fay Porter received a honorable mention for outstanding performer.
