HEAD START ON COLLEGE

Opportunities abound for high school students wanting to get a leg up on their college careers

HARLAN -- Today’s high school students have many opportunities to get a jump start on fulfilling college requirements by completing college classes before graduating from high school. Area students have been taking college credit classes at their respective high schools for many years and in recent years students have been sitting in classrooms on campus at the Shelby County campus of Iowa Western Community College in Harlan participating in what the college calls College Early Start.
Lori Stitz, director of the Shelby County Center of IWCC, said there are many benefits to earning college credit while in high school. Stitz said high school administrators provide these opportunities for students with the partnerships they have with community colleges. Taking college level course while in high school can be beneficial when applying for scholarships and applying to college.
