Emergency meeting to extend money for HMU water plant
HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utility Board of Trustees met in an emergency meeting Monday, Dec. 4 to approve expenses for a “fix” to the Water Treatment Plant.
The board heard management explain their three-year research on problems with the state-of-the-art plant. Saying the on-going issues involving higher than expected expenses for filters, media fibers and general maintenance called for repairs to be investigated.
In order for the repair process to begin in mid-January, and avoid a possible eight-month delay and 10 percent higher costs, the board called the meeting.
The repair expense is estimated at $550,000 with about $318,000 already budgeted for that plant’s maintenance. The remaining money will be a budget shift from what was proposed water tower work. That budgeted tower expense had not been contracted for, and now will be pushed to next fiscal year.
